"Let the Writing Paper Win"

shake the paint, then paint the shakes
catch what's there before it cakes
parchment dancing wildly with the pen
that's when the writing paper wins

let new thoughts just usher in
it's not all pain when pleasure wins
let it take you where it may
the miracle is today

it passes fast from start to end
don't even try to reel it in
just give it to the parchment with your pen
that's when the writing paper wins

let it speak and have its say
never judge one single day
your life, the parchment
your mind, the pen

shake the paint, then paint the shakes
enjoy your toy before it breaks
let it take you where it may
the miracle of just one day

you'll have to bend or you will break
you'll have to give or they will take
your life, the parchment
your mind, the pen

you shook the paint, then painted great
taught with your mind for the children's sake
your parchment danced so wildly with your pen
one teacher let the writing paper win

just let your writing paper win.
your life, the parchment
your mind, the pen
just let the writing paper win.

  1. This is what I sent Jane today:

    Hey girl,

I wanted to share this with you. You and Carl were missed at the festival. As you know, tributes were made for Carl and Charley. I was at the first Mosier set on Saturday. It had rained all day and we'd been cooped up at the campsite. I've only heard them play twice and really liked them, so luckily the rain stopped and I went to go see them. I was on the rail, and the music really spoke to me. Spoke so much that all of a sudden I had tears running down my face. I just couldn't stop crying. For Charley and Cindy and you and Carl. Wasn't sobbing or anything, but I was just overcome by emotion. It's really powerful when music hits you like that. I was exhausted after their set. I walked back to the campsite, and on the way I had to go through the checkpoint. I've made friends with the two women that work it - "Sassy" and "Ma" - they work at the prison but do the cp gig every Spring and Mag. Ma saw that I was upset and said "come here baby and sit on my lap" so I did and we talked about friends passing and she soothed me. It turns out that they had a prison guard friend who had been killed by inmates three days prior and that made us all cry (again).

I told David McC about my experience on the rail the next day, and he thought it was beautiful; we both spoke about how powerful music can be. Luckily, I saw Rev. Jeff at the ampitheater and introduced myself and told him how much their performance meant to me. I also thanked him for all that he had done for you. He told me how wonderful you and Carl are, and said that you are a strong woman who will survive, and survive beautifully. You are a gentle soul, and I just wanted to share this with you ~ Molly
